Auto Detailing Business Requirements in Michigan

Michigan does not have a statewide general business license for auto detailers. Business entities (LLC, corporation) register with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Sole proprietors using a trade name file an Assumed Name Certificate with the county clerk. Michigan does not have a blanket statewide business license requirement, but local cities and townships have their own requirements. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and other cities each have independent business license processes. Mobile detailers must not allow wash water, chemicals, or sediment to enter storm drains, ditches, or waterways. Detroit, Grand Rapids, and other cities have municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s) with stormwater programs. Consider water reclamation systems or waterless methods.

Michigan cities and townships issue local business licenses independently. Detroit requires a Detroit Business License. Grand Rapids has its own licensing process. Some Michigan municipalities require automotive service businesses to meet specific zoning requirements. If operating a shop, ensure zoning allows automotive services. Home occupation permits may be required for home-based businesses. Wayne County, Kent County, and other counties may have additional permit requirements.

Michigan requires workers' compensation insurance for all employers with three or more regular full-time employees, or one or more employees who work 35 or more hours per week for 13 or more weeks per year.
