How to use this template

1
One sheet per week

Create a new tab or copy this template for each week. Keep a year folder organized by month (e.g., 2026-07-Timesheets).

2
Calculate hours automatically

In Excel/Sheets, the Total Hours Worked formula is: =(Clock Out - Clock In)*24 - (Lunch Break/60). Format clock-in/out cells as time.

3
Track tips for accurate payroll

Tips are taxable income for employees and must be reported. Log them here and include in payroll reporting. Consult a payroll provider or accountant for compliance guidance.

4
Check overtime thresholds

Most states require overtime pay (1.5x) for hours over 40 per week. Some states (CA) have daily overtime rules. Check your state labor laws — do not rely solely on this spreadsheet for compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a timesheet if I pay staff per job?

It depends on how you classify workers. If they are employees (W-2), federal and state wage and hour laws likely require time tracking regardless of pay structure. If they are independent contractors (1099), time tracking is less critical legally but still useful for management. Consult an employment attorney or HR professional about proper worker classification for detailing businesses.
